The idea of a group project can be intimidating to many college goers but especially in an online class setting. Some of us did not know what to expect, merely hoping that we would not be saddled with uncooperative members. No one wants to badger another for the support and hard work that all should contribute, and luckily no one had to. Besides the (gratefully) easy communication between members of our group, the issues we had all selected to represent in our writings flowed together nearly seamlessly.
When we began discussing what we wanted to do with our project it was easy to see why we had been grouped together. Our chosen issues were all fairly similar, but different enough to keep from being repetitive. Rape Culture, Gender Issues with an emphasis on Feminism, Sexism and LGBT Rights are issues today that are interconnected easily. This connection made it easy for everyone to decide on their second revision piece as well, since we had all done a profile about someone facing these issues or someone fighting to resolve them. Having these four pieces be the main focus of our magazine gives it a distinct theme of being about strong and empowering women, an idea supported by our adaptations.
Working in a group that had similar interests really helped bring out the best in our papers. Being able to compare our viewpoints and opinions helped with developing a strong rhetoric in our projects since the members of our group are part of our intended audience. It has been interesting research all the different angles you could take on the same issue. The Information effect and Persuasive essays are pretty standard. However, looking at your issue from your own point of view, or someone else’s is pretty eye opening; especially with sexism. As a woman, as everyone in our groups is, it’s so embedded in your life that when you stop and think about it, it’s mind blowing. Too anyone else working on this Magazine project, I would say, utilize all of your work from the class. There are so many extra things you can add that you have already done. Don’t let your other assignments go to waste. Put your project over the top with extra pieces.
Our magazine has a very strong and unified message about feminism and the importance of gender equality because our individual topics were so naturally linked. By all using our profile pieces as the main features of the magazine it reinforces that our focus is on the strength and resilience of women. Each member of the group used many resources to ensure that our projects were presenting the most accurate view of our topic possible. The site is fairly simple and easy to navigate putting the focus on the content instead of design gimmicks. While we feel that our project is a strong show of our individual issues and strengths there is always room to revise and improve our writing or the site itself as we become more familiar with this new and challenging medium.
