This song is probably the first song I was aware of that spoke directly to gender equality, though to be honest I did not understand it when I first heard it. Gwen Stefani sings about being “just a girl” and therefore not allowed to do things like driving late at night, or having to run and hide because she wasn’t as safe being a girl as a boy might be.

“God help you if you are ugly, course too pretty is also your doom, ‘cause everyone harbors a secret hatred for the prettiest girl in the room”. This is a wonderful example of the standards women are held to, that our appearances are so important to how people treat us, but even being “right”, that is to be pretty, can be treated wrong. A woman seen as “ugly” might be harassed for it, called a slob, or even told that she doesn’t deserve love because of her looks. However being “pretty” and taking care with your appearance can get a woman called vain or shallow, or assumed to be bitchy just because of how she looks when both women are far more complex under the surface.

Only Women Bleed by Alice Cooper
-
Only Women Bleed is about the uneven power plays in abusive marriages. He paints a story about a woman who spends her life trying to please her man, feeding him dinner, taking his seed, etc. only for him to lie to her, stay out late partying, and physically abusing her. The somber tone that Cooper sings this song in shows that this isn’t celebrating this awful situation, but rather mourning that it exists. While he doesn't come out and damn it, it can be inferred that Cooper is against domestic abuse and the idea that men have, and deserve, more power in their relationships with women.

Just Because I'm a Woman by Dolly Parton
-
This song addresses the double standards of the last 60s that are still around today of slut shaming. She talks about how when a man sleeps with a woman it ruins her reputation (not his) and that when he wants to get married he will drop that girl and find himself an “angel” which can be inferred to mean a virgin. But Parton’s message is that her mistake, sleeping with the man, is no worse than his was for sleeping with her and that she shouldn’t be treated as though she committed a deeper crime on the basis of her sex.

You dont Own Me by Lesley Gore
-
Female agency is the theme of this song. She starts by saying “you do not own me” saying she isn’t one his toys and that she is free to do what she wants to even if that includes seeing other boys or speaking her mind. It’s a very powerful message even though the song’s tone and music is rather subdued. My favorite version of this is actually from the movie First Wives’ Club that ends with Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton singing the song. Their version comes across more defiant in the face of being treated like something a man has control of because of the stronger tone they use and the music is more powerful sounding. This might just be down to the times they were recorded though, since Gore debuted the song in 1963 and the movie was from 1996.

This song addresses the almost impossible standards of beauty women today are held to, being told that their worth is based on their looks. The chorus says you can alter yourself because “he” says to and that you can try and hide under fake hair and makeup but if you can’t see inside to the root of the situation it won’t change anything. The video is very powerful as well, showing two girls in different situations being told they are not good enough (one because she is not slim, the other because she has a small chest) and how that controls their lives until both at the end look inside to see that there are things much more important than the shape of their bodies.

I’m Just a Girl – No Doubt
-
“Cause I’m just a girl. Oh little old me. Well don’t let me out of your sight. Oh I’m just a girl, all pretty and petite. So don’t let me have any rights.”
-
There are a couple issues tackled in this song. Gwen sings about many stereotypes of what a woman should be, or look like. Due to this, it seems that they don’t have rights. She also talks about how scary the world seems to a woman. There doesn’t seem to be anything you can do without being afraid. Even walking outside is terrifying.

Keep Ya Head Up – Tupac
-
"And since we all came from a woman, got our name from a woman, and our game from a woman. I wonder why we take from our woman. Why we rape our woman? Do we hate our woman?”
-
This song discusses Men’s attitude towards women. It is very demeaning in most cases. Tupac talks about why he feels it doesn’t make sense. He describes his childhood and what his mother gave up to raise him. He talks about why men need to treat women with more respect. It isn’t that she’s a woman, it’s that she’s a person. This song encourages women to keep pushing through and keep their heads up cause it’ll get better.

Boys Don't Cry - The Cure
-
“Now I would do almost anything to get you back by my side, but I just keep laughing, hiding the tears in my eyes, cause boys don’t cry.”
-
This song shows one of the many reasons Men are effected by sexism too. Boys are taught at a young age that men don’t cry, by being told to “be a man” when they are crying. Young boys are teased throughout school if they do cry. They are told to “quit being such a girl”. Men can’t seem to show their feelings without being deemed as girly and are put down for it.

When I Was a Boy – Dar Williams
-
“And now I'm in a clothing store, and the sign says less is more. More that's tight means more to see, more for them, not more for me. That can't help me climb a tree in ten seconds flat.”
-
In this song, Dar sing about when she was younger she could get dirty and rough and play like boys do and it was okay. Now that she is older, she can’t do that anymore. They want her to wear less and add things to her body. They want her to fit into a mold of what a woman should be. She concludes the song by addressing that men can’t act the way they want either. When their younger they can be girls as in cry and like feminine things. She calls out a huge issue in our society.

Guys Do It All the Time - Mindy McCready
-
"Guys do it all the time and except us to understand. When the shoe's on the other foot, you know that's when it hits the fan. Get over honey life's a two way street or you won't be a man of mine.”
-
Mindy addresses the double standard of our society in this song. In this song she implies that a woman has to be perfect, but a man doesn’t have to apologize that he isn’t. Men are upset when you don’t do what they want or expect. But when he does something you don’t want or expect, you better get over it. She explains that it has to go both ways. It’s not fair to women to be held to a higher standard in character. You need to act like a lady.

Not a Pretty Girl – Ani DiFranco
-
"I'm not a pretty girl. That is not what I do. I ain't no damsel in distress and I don't need to be rescued. So put me down punk. Wouldn't you prefer a maiden fair? Isn't there a kitten stuck up in a tree somewhere?"
-
In this song Ani challenges the idea that woman have to be pretty and can’t be strong. She isn’t a pretty girl. That’s not what defines her. She does so much more than that. She goes on to explain that she isn’t there for the saving. She can take care of herself, and the assumption that she can’t is not fair to women. A cat stuck in a tree will eventually figure out how to get down.

Songs for LGBT by Sierra Dille

In This Shirt- The Irreplaceables
-
In this song, the artist is clearly talking about the struggles of accepting who you are and the fear of being accepted when coming out. "I am lost, in a rainbow, no rainbow has gone" That feeling of being lost and having no one to turn to is one that many people have, especially when coming out. The music video for this song is very strange but super artsy and appealing. It pulls you in that's for sure!

Beautiful- Christina Aguilara
-
The classic Christina song! The lyrics speak for themselves in this one! This song relates to the LGBT community by reminding everyone that no matter what other people think of you, you are beautiful and that will never change. It is especially hard to feel beautiful if people around you, including those you love, do not approve of your sexualty. You are beautiful just the way you are is an inspiring message we all need to incorporate in our lives.

Same Love- Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
-
Ah yes, the famous song that was number one on the charts for so long! This song came out before same sex marriage was legal in all 50 states. Macklemores message was clearly the legalization of same sex marriage. Many people actually protested getting married until same sex marriage became legal. It was not right that I could marry a man but a man couldn't marry another man. Macklemores lyrics spoke volumes and moved many people. Now, same sex marriage is legal in all 50 states!

I Kissed a Girl- Katy Perry
-
Another classic song! This is the song that launched Katy Perry's career in my eyes. This song is super catchy and almost everyone knows all the lyrics. "I kissed a girl and I liked it, the taste of her cherry chapstick." This is obviously intended for a lesbian audience since it is talking about two girls kissing. Katy Perry is not lesbian though. She just chose to sing a song about kissing a girl! Many people questioned her sexuality after this song was released but we all know that she is straight.

To This Day- Shane Koyczan
-
If you haven't listened to this song/poem, you need to listen to it right now. Okay, now that you've listened to it, you know what I'm talking about. This song is not related to the LGBT community specifically but it does focus heavily on bullying which almost all LGBT people go through. This poem follows the live of two kids and shows the impact that being bullied as a child has when you are an adult. Some wounds never heal, especially those that can't be seen. It is important to always remember that you do not know what someone else is going through and that it is never okay to bully someone because you can do so much more damage than you think.
